I just wanted pay my humble respects and say thanks to one of the best written shows that just aired their final episode this past Sunday. Yes, I’m talking about The Wire (Like the rest of the country). Few shows have came along that just kept it simple and kept it real. The complexity was in the simplicity of all outcomes. What really impressed me was the fact that creator David Simon’s never really exploited the gritty Baltimore streets and the factors that controlled it’s resident’s lives. Rather it exposed and brought to the surface the real issues and how day to day aspects affected every characters life.

(BFF’s)

Im still digesting the episode. But what really haunted me was the willingness for major characters to accept their fates. Even if you were rooting for them or against them the show taught us that the people that live this life understand it is a cycle that they can not escape, death was always the last price to pay. Some scenes and lines that are still haunting me from this seaon. SPOILERS

“Fuck a re-up son, this is a re-supply” Freamon

Joe: “I treated you like a son”
Marlo: “I wasn’t meant to play the part of the son….. close your eyes now”

Marlo to Joe before he assumed complete control of the connect.

I really couldn’t believe that Chris really took the heat and did life just as long as his people where taken care of but it’s not like we haven’t seen that before.

Snoop: How my hair look
Michael: You look good girl

This was an awesome scene since Snoop was one of my favorite characters and I wondered how she would act at the end. The whole series she was manlier than anyone else acting as Marlo’s executioner and when her time came she went out with some pride and like a soldier.

Michael saying goodbye to his little brother for the last time was heartbreaking but when he kicked in the door on the Rim shop officially taking over Omar’s position as Baltimore’s anti hero and drug stick up man, out on his own was awesome.

But the most interesting part (to me) was Marlo. He beat the case, came out clean plus ten mill. Now he’s in a high rise fancy party hanging out with fat cats and cigars. He’s come up from streets, stayed alive and has finally gone legit. He won After all that what does he do? He runs out, gets into a fight and almost gets shot on the corner. But he wins standing there at the only place he ever felt safe. He’s home, accepting his fate.

This is one of the most fascinating stories of 07 to me. This is the story of a grass routs operation that’s about to break big. Everyone knows about Boost Mobil. The people behind those “where you at” commercials that end up getting stuck in your head. What I like about Boost is that it’s smartly targeted at the urban/ hip hop youth demographic. Unlike other brands, from the gate it identified itself with an already built in target demographic giving it instant street cred that works.

For example almost two and a half years ago there was a Boost Mobil commercial featuring Kanye West, Luda and a small unknown rapper simply known as The Game(watch here). In the commercial you can see he’s wearing “G-unit” logo. Soon after he’d go on to release two major albums, start a war with 50 cent the guy that brought him in then go onto be kicked out of G unit and now nobody cares about him. But it was a very smart move by Boost (who’s based out of california) to catch on the hype of an unknown rapper early because they knew he’d blow up.

For the last month or so I’ve been seeing this new Boost commercial.

We see J Dupri, and Jeezy. two prominent figures in Hip hop but then there’s a third guy simply refering to himself as “That Dude”. The guy comes off looking like a complete “mo” and one thinks to themselves when did skinny white gay guys become a part of Boost advertising campaign. But there must have been something important enough about the guy to get him noticed. Who is “that dude” and can lightning strike twice from turning an unknown to a commercial success almost over night?

Well after doing some research, I come to find out that “That Dude” is no other than Mickey Avalon. A man poised to be a break out hit in 08. His story is kind of crazy and it’s easy to write him off as another white rapper taking a page out of Eminem’s play book. But the guy is an underground street legend in LA.

The thing is it’s just so crazy that it might just work. For one thing, for some reason or another GIRLS LOVE THIS GUY!!! He moves like a coked out Mick Jagger.
